Mr. Hup

Mr. Hup died yesterday. His burial was today, which is unfortunate since it’s been snowing since Friday and there’s a twelve inch blanket of white over everything in town.

But it’s ok, Tiny found some spare soil in the house, so we just buried him in the kitchen.

Tiny took it the hardest. It was she who rescued Mr. Hup Ant from a certain demise, when Rico found the first of the spring ants scouting in the kitchen. Mr. Hup was headed straight for a squishing when Tiny saw him, named him, and made him a lovely home full of bread crumbs and raspberries.

As you may know, Tiny is not a girl of many words, but she did gather us all in the dining room to deliver a formal eulogy, followed by a brownie reception and burial. She has given me permission to share her words here:

“Welcome to the funeral of Mr. H. Ant. He lived a short but courageous life. He came from a hill and made a long journey to here. He hoped to bring back a tender bread crumb. He has always wanted for people to be kinder to ants. He left behind his 60,000 brothers and sisters and his queen. There used to be 10,000,000 members of his family, then 60,001, then sadly 60,000. He was a great ant. he will always be remembered. Please join us for a gathering in the living room. Food will be served.”

I can only hope to be remembered half as fondly by my children.
