whats up
The first day of school sucks.
Like for real.
My house is cleaner - that's a bonus. But Rico is working, it's too quiet and there's nobody here but the dog and the Bee Gees Pandora station to keep me company (don't judge).
But there are some things to be grateful for (besides the fact that I ate an entire bag of M&M's without having to share).
Let's start with this:
Two years ago, despite being really excited for kindergarten, this same girl stood on the asphalt of the playground for nearly two weeks, because her SM wouldn't allow her to ask anyone else to play. Today she was greeted with shouts and hugs and spins and smiles as she ran off laughing to play with these guys. (Including the little saint on the right hand side who was the first kid ever to ask her to play - god bless that child).
And then there is this:
Kooka's very best friend moved one block away last year, so they can head to school together every day, share clothes, swap notes and have last-minute sleepovers whenever they want. Kooka's got a part in the fall musical, a seat on the district youth council, an AP class or two and an online language class she's really looking forward to.
Annnnd this one:
He loves school. Maybe for the first time ever. (Let's ignore the writing on the write board - it's probably penises. I'm not zooming in to check, but I've been down enough dorm room hallways to guess.)
He auditioned for his first ever college show and got exactly the role he'd been wishing for since he was six. He'll be playing the part of Snoopy in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown.
His girlfriend flew in from Nebraska for a surprise visit, and he headed back to town with her so we could see them both - and take in a day at the RenFest. Which some of us like more than others. (If you're keeping track - I'm with him).
