neutropenic

We went to get some dinner for Rico tonight, found this photo pinned to the bulletin board of his favorite sub shop - seven years after it was taken.  I had planned to make him pasta for dinner  -  but "plans" and us aren't exactly on the best of terms.

It turns out the that Rico is neutropenic. This means his white blood cell count is so low that he is at extreme risk of infection. At best case, some people are neutropenic and it passes in a few days, in other cases they also develop an infection, in extreme cases the infection is severe.

Right now he does have a slight infection with a low-grade fever that comes and goes. He's at a nearby hospital and feeling really good considering.

We've been relatively fastidious about hand washing, but today was the first time we've all had to be masked when we were in the hospital with him. Somehow this made things different, it made things MORE, it made made him sick and us dangerous.

At least that's how it felt, and it was clear that one of our kids was feeling it, so we only stayed for ten minutes.

He's always my Mr. Incredible, but I hope he's feeling like it again soon.
