the best one
Most people think they have the very best dad. And they probably do - the very best for them. And we have the very best for us.
We started the day with a 5 am snuggle. His friend Frank showed up at 7:00 to brew fresh coffee and warm up fresh baked cinnamon rolls (our friends dropped them off last night, along with homemade mac and cheese, cookies. fresh bread, organic mango hibiscus tea, and a bag full of snacks and love - have we mentioned how lucky we are?). While the kids slept in, we listened to Nika speaking on a mental health podcast - she was wonderful, and Rico was so proud of his super brave kid.
Home health showed up to wash Rico's hair (in bed - I didn't even know that was possible). After a shave and a new Beatles T-shirt he looked like a million bucks.
There was quiche for Father's day brunch (from the same friends that fed us last night), and a movie for Noah, Rico and Frank (The Big Lebowski), while the girls went for a walk.
After a nap, the kids and Rico and I gathered on the gigantic bed we've created by smashing his hospital bed next to our king. We had filled out a book called "I love you Dad". It was full of fill in the blanks like "I'm grateful for _______." "You make me laugh when ________" "You make the best _______."
We read the book out loud to him and made him guess who'd written each one - he was right about 90% of the time. We only cried about 10 percent of the time. It was mostly laughs and good memories.
The kids gave him handmade (and digitally made) cards and notes.
He and Frank spent two hours going through old cards, letters and photos.
Then his good friend Tom showed up with pizza, wine, and ice cream for everyone - Tom makes everything a party. Rico tried everything but the wine - because seizure meds.
He said it was one of the greatest father's days ever. I know it's one we'll never forget.
